The pyramid complex of Teotihuacan north of Mexico City, which I visited last week, is impressive, but even more impressive is the fact that the pyramids were built without the use of the wheel or wheeled traction.

The absence of transport wheels was not a failure of imagination but a rational response to a landscape devoid of large domesticated herbivo…
