Historical memory is selective. Success is remembered, failure is quickly forgotten. We often talk about the agricultural turn, the printing press, the industrial revolution, but we seldom engage in post-mortems. For every medieval cathedral still standing, dozens have since collapsed. For every word still surviving, tens disappeared.
